Most of what shortens a sofa's life isn't one big accident — it's small, repeated wear that adds up over months and years. The good news is that a handful of simple habits can noticeably slow that process down, with almost no extra effort.
Rotating and flipping cushions every few weeks spreads out the wear so one seat doesn't take all the pressure. Vacuuming the fabric or wiping down leather weekly keeps dust and grit from working its way into the weave or grain, where it slowly wears fibres down from the inside.
Direct sun is one of the biggest causes of premature fading and, for leather, drying and cracking. Where possible, keep a sofa out of direct afternoon sun, or use curtains or blinds during the brightest hours if it sits near a window.
Dealing with spills immediately — blotting rather than rubbing — prevents stains from setting in permanently. And keeping sharp objects, pet claws and rough fabrics like denim away from delicate upholstery goes a long way toward avoiding the small tears and snags that eventually call for a full recover.
